The 10 Week Appointment

Once we saw a heartbeat on the 7 week ultrasound, we scheduled a 10 week appointment for July 8. This appointment was a little different from previous ones, because we got to meet with one of the the doctors for the first time. They also did a lot of bloodwork. Now, I used to be absolutely terrified of having my blood drawn. I would rather have a tooth pulled than be poked with a needle. NO JOKE. However...this whole pregnancy experience has effectively cured that phobia. Lucky for me, repeated and forced exposure to something you hate can actually make the the dreaded event much more tolerable. ***Disclaimer: This sage advice does NOT apply to all dangerous or unpleasant things in life, like tornados or grizzly bear attacks.

The part of the appointment we were most excited for didn't turn out exactly how we hoped. The doctor tried to listen for the baby's heartbeat using a Doppler. Doppler is much less sensitive than ulstrasound, so he warned us up front that this technique works less than 50% of the time when you are only 10 weeks along. He tried for a few minutes with no luck, but assured us that all other signs were pointing to everything being okay. We trusted that he was right, but we were a little disappointed. I pushed my anxiety to the back of my mind and replaced it with what every parent knows is imperative when it comes to dealing with children (even ones we haven't met yet who only one inch tall): PATIENCE. We would need to wait until our 12 week ultrasound to see and hear our little one again.
